From February to July 2024, search interest for "how to delete" social media accounts surged across platforms, revealing growing user fatigue and a heightened focus on privacy and digital well-being, shows the index.

Search interest for "how to delete" social media accounts rose by 24% over the six-month period, indicating a significant trend of users re-evaluating their online presence and engagement, says Rodrigo Pozo-Graviz, CEO of MyTelescope.

TikTok experienced a 65% increase in deletion-related searches, as measured by the MyTelescope Index. This suggests that users may be questioning the platform's privacy policies, content algorithm changes, or its overall value in their daily lives.

Despite remaining the top platforms for deletion-related searches, both Facebook and Instagram saw a decline in interest, suggesting a potential plateau in user engagement. Users may have already taken steps to manage or delete their accounts, leading to a stabilisation in search volumes, says MyTelescope.

According to MyTelescope, Twitter, recently rebranded as X, saw a 25% increase in deletion-related searches. This uptick may reflect user dissatisfaction with the platform's new direction and changes, prompting many to reconsider their continued use.

The first half of 2024 has underscored a significant shift in social media usage patterns, with a notable rise in searches for account deletions. While Facebook and Instagram continue to dominate these searches, the sharp increases seen on TikTok and Twitter suggest deeper underlying issues, says MyTelescope.

TikTok's spike in deletion-related interest could be tied to concerns over privacy, changes in content algorithms, or a perception of decreasing platform value. Meanwhile, Twitter's rebranding to X and the subsequent platform changes appear to have unsettled a portion of its user base, leading to an increase in deletion interest, says the index.

Pozo-Graviz concludes that as social media platforms face these emerging challenges, they will need to adapt to the evolving needs and expectations of their users. Addressing user fatigue, enhancing privacy features and offering more transparent and user-friendly account management options will be crucial in retaining their user base.
