This September, Rodney Trudgeon marks 50 years in broadcasting, a career that has included senior roles and presenting positions at the SABC, Classic FM and Fine Music Radio.
Trudgeon began his broadcasting career at the SABC in 1976. He subsequently worked at Classic FM, before joining Fine Music Radio in 2005 as a presenter and programme manager, says Fine Music Radio.
After serving as programme manager for many years, Trudgeon handed over the role to Wesley Lewis. However, Trudgeon continues to present Classic Morning and People of Note on Fine Music Radio. He has also published a book, Rodney Trudgeon's Concert Notes: A Selection of Favourite Orchestral Masterpieces. In 2019 he was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame. "I am most grateful to be celebrating 50 years in broadcasting. It is a privilege, and I have been very encouraged by the response from our listeners," says Trudgeon.
His 50th anniversary will be marked on Fine Music Radio with a number of programmes and features, adds the station.
Trudgeon has selected his top 50 favourite classical works, covering a wide range of composers and styles. The selection includes some of the works that have been particularly significant to him during his broadcasting career. On Monday, 14 September at 18:30 for 19:00, Trudgeon will present Behind the Music — The Third Movement at Artscape. In this final programme of the series, he reflects on his experiences in broadcasting and the music that has featured in his career. On Monday, 21 September, Rodney will be Mike Mills' guest on People of Note, says the station.
During his career, Trudgeon has been closely associated with classical music broadcasting and has interviewed musicians, conductors and other figures from the local and international music world. Fine Music Radio Station Manager, Vasili Vass, concludes, "Rodney has made a significant contribution to broadcasting and to classical music in South Africa. We congratulate him on reaching 50 years in the industry."
