From family companions and therapy animals to guide and rescue dogs, dogs play an large role in the lives of millions of South Africans. They're celebrated globally for their companionship, emotional support and contributions to society, while responsible pet ownership and adoption remain important priorities for animal welfare organisations, says the NPO.

Their ability to connect with people can make them great companions. FOUR PAWS notes that while many dogs enjoy loving homes, countless others still face challenges including abandonment, neglect and life on the streets. 

As communities across South Africa mark International Dog Day, FOUR PAWS is encouraging people to spend quality time with their pets through activities that support their physical and emotional wellbeing. This can include visiting dog-friendly outdoor spaces, participating in community dog walks, engaging in positive play and training activities or simply setting aside extra time for companionship.

"Dogs enrich our lives in countless ways. They provide companionship, comfort and unconditional loyalty. International Dog Day is an opportunity to recognise everything they bring to our families while also remembering the many dogs still waiting for loving homes," says Fiona Miles, Director of FOUR PAWS South Africa.

The organisation also encourages South Africans who are considering adding a pet to their family to explore adoption through reputable shelters and welfare organisations. Shelter adoption not only provides a second chance for a deserving dog but also helps alleviate pressure on facilities that care for large numbers of animals awaiting homes. FOUR PAWS says it actively supports responsible pet ownership and promotes initiatives that improve the welfare of dogs and communities alike.

"Every dog deserves the opportunity to live a life free from suffering and filled with care, protection and companionship. By choosing adoption, supporting local shelters and being a responsible pet owner, every South African can play a role in creating a kinder world for animals," adds Miles. 

International Dog Day aims to serve as a timely reminder that the bond between people and dogs is built on trust, respect and lifelong commitment. As South Africans celebrate their dogs this August, FOUR PAWS hopes the occasion will inspire greater compassion for all dogs both those already enjoying loving homes and those still waiting for a family to call their own.
