Beyond celebration, the event served as a platform for Uber to announce a suite of strategic, structural partnerships with industry leaders including Telesure, Dunlop, Kilomita and Shoprite, all aimed at significantly enabling better earning opportunities, says Uber.

The gathering brought together drivers, fleet owners, and public stakeholders to celebrate this move towards long-term economic sustainability. By tackling the primary pain points of the transport business — fuel, maintenance, insurance, and cash flow — Uber is doubling down on its commitment to providing credible earning opportunities for independent entrepreneurs.

Turning on the Engine of Economic Opportunity

In South Africa, e-hailing drivers are more than just service providers; they are independent business owners supporting families and connecting millions of people to jobs, healthcare and education. The event honoured the top earners across the country, including the Driver of the Year, who was awarded a new electric vehicle by Valternative, a fleet partner operating on the Uber platform, for his exceptional service and safety record, adds Uber.

"Drivers are truly the heartbeat of our cities," says Deepesh Thomas, General Manager for Uber Sub-Saharan Africa. "Every trip taken on the platform represents a pulse of economic activity. Today is about recognising that contribution while providing the practical, bottom-line support that drivers need to thrive. We aren't just celebrating their hard work; we are supporting the sustainability of their businesses."

Structural Support: Strengthening Sustainable Economic Opportunity

To address the rising costs of operation, Uber unveiled a comprehensive ecosystem of partnerships designed for drivers on the Uber platform to maximise economic opportunities available for every driver on the platform:

SmartOps Vehicle Financing

E-hailing drivers have historically faced barriers to accessing formal vehicle finance. Through SMARTOps, drivers can now access tailored and affordable vehicle financing and ownership solutions designed specifically for their earning model, helping them build assets and scale their businesses sustainably.

New Revenue Streams

Through a collaboration with ROHM Media, drivers can install digital taxi-top advertising screens on their vehicles, unlocking the opportunity to earn up to R5 000 in additional monthly income.

Fuel and Maintenance Support

Kilomita provides drivers with direct fuel savings to reduce daily operating expenses, while Dunlop offers significant tyre discounts to ease the financial pressure of vehicle upkeep and maintenance.

Vehicle Insurance Support

Through Telesure, drivers gain access to tailored and competitively priced insurance solutions at a price point that reflects their professional status.

Financial Flexibility

Through Shoprite, drivers will have access to discounted funeral insurance and affordable cross-border remittance solutions, helping them protect their loved ones and send money with greater ease.

Personal and Professional Development

Through a strategic partnership with October Health, drivers gain access to a comprehensive digital support ecosystem, designed to assist with mental wellbeing, stress management and professional skills development.

"By streamlining the costs associated with independent work, we are strengthening the overall economic value proposition for every driver," says Thomas. "By negotiating these deals at scale, we are helping drivers manage the daily operational costs, ensuring that the Uber platform remains a resilient pathway to economic participation."

Built With Heart, Driven by Excellence

The event featured a dedicated safety presentation, highlighting Uber's ongoing investment in driver protections and product enhancements. Uber emphasised its partnership with Aura, which provides every driver with in-app access to a best-in-class panic button connected to armed response, medical emergency services and roadside assistance, with live trip details shared in real time — at no cost to the driver. The session reinforced that safety is a core investment and crucial for building trust on the platform, says Uber.

The afternoon culminated in an awards ceremony that celebrated earners across the board — from Safety Champion to Best Rider Experience — with the ultimate prize, a brand-new electric vehicle, being awarded alongside other valuable prizes like fuel vouchers and new tyres.

As South Africa's mobility landscape evolves, Uber remains committed to listening to and building with the community of earners who keep the nation moving. The announcements mark a milestone in that journey — proving that when the heart of the city is supported, the entire city moves better, concludes Uber.
